Freedom and Hampstead Sewage Service Areas Toilet Flushing Paper Towels and Wipes
Westminster, MD, 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, March 18, 2020 – The Carroll County Bureau of Utilities is requesting public cooperation to refrain from toilet flushing paper towels and wipes. While it is understood that there have been difficulties regarding the availability of toilet tissue throughout the Freedom and Hampstead service areas, please refrain from flushing paper towels or wipes of any type, even those labeled as flushable, down the toilet. Paper towels and wipes do not disintegrate like toilet tissue. Instead, paper towels and wipes get snagged by tree root intrusions and sewer pipe and joint imperfections. These snags often result in sewer system blockages. These products can also cause issues at the pumping stations and treatment plants when introduced into the system. With limited staffing and other priority matters, there will be challenges for the Bureau of Utilities to react to and clear blockages in a timely manner. While refraining from flushing these products is always important, it is extremely important during this challenging period for our operation.
Help us help you. Refrain from flushing anything but toilet tissue down the toilet.
If you have any questions regarding this request, please call the Bureau of Utilities office at 410-386-2164.
